Causes of Sciatica

Filed under: Uncategorized — biopathics @ 3:13 am

Sciatica is the term for a back injury that results in a herniated disk pressing on the sciatic nerve. This nerve pain can feel like it starts on your back and radiates down the back of your leg all the way down and out the bottom of your foot.

A person is most likely to experience the pain of Sciatica between the ages of 30 and 50. It could be caused by a slip and fall accident at work or in the market place. Falls at home can cause a back injury that results in Sciatica also. It may also be the result of just aging and the general wear and tear on the body that goes along with that. Any sudden jolt to the lower spine can cause a disk to suddenly become herniated.

When you have herniated a disc, the gel like center of the disk may protrude out thru the lining of the outer walls. If it slips out to the point of pressing on the sciatic nerve that runs along the spinal column, a radiating pain down the leg results. There may also be a numbness or feeling of pins and needles in the leg.

Statistics show that 1 in every 50 people will at some point in their life, experience a herniated a disk. The symptoms of Sciatica can last more than 6 weeks. An emergency situation may also arise in those rare cases where the disk presses on the nerve that can cause loss of bladder and bowel control. Numbness in the groin area may be experienced in these cases. This is an emergency and you should seek immediate medical care.

Personal injury attorneys will advise their client to gather as much evidence as they can if there was a fall or injury that happened away from home. A claim for injury may be filed for damages if you have suffered a fall away home or been in any type of accident that has caused Sciatica. However these cases are very hard to prove in court so the need of a spinal cord personal injury attorney is strongly advised.
